Abstract
A Sample of an Arabic Proverbs Translation: Qudsi's Terceme-i Durub-i Emsal-i Arabiyye
Proverbs, which are the most concise mirrors of culture
and civilization, have been remarkable metaphors almost
every period. The sources emphasize that proverbs are used
to strengthen meaning and to express thought in a short
way. The deep structure, meaning, and story behind every
proverb are very important in the context of the word. The
proverbs, which are frequently seen in literary texts under
the influence of Iranian and Arabic literature in the Islamic
period, have been mostly studied after the 17th century.
Qudsi’s work “Terceme-i Durub-i Emsal-i Arabiyye” is
translation of Arabic proverbs into Turkish. The work of
Qudsi consists of 28 chapters. He translated 120 proverbs
in alphabetical order and translated them. Qudsi's explanation
of the reasons for the use of proverbs, in particular,
distinguishes him from his peers. Qudsi's didactic attitude
in his work is one of the main elements. The explanations
of the “Terceme-i Durûb-i Emsâl-i Arabiyye” show that a
different style dominates the work. This work is dedicated
to Sultan Ahmed 3nd. When we look at the Arab proverbs
mentioned in the book, we have determined that the
Qur'an, hadith, event, simile, verse, wisdom and poetry
have been chosen.
