Abstract
Is it Possible to Read Yahya Kemal’s Soz Meydani Poem as a Naat?
Yahyâ Kemâl is a bridge between old literature and new literature. Some of his poems are shown as examples of old literature and some of them are shown as examples of new literature. This article is about the subject of his ghazal named Söz Meydani in his book Eski Şiirin Rüzgarıyle. Söz Meydani has the characteristics of old poetry and it was written in a similar style (nazire) “olalı” rhymed ghazal of Muallim Naci. Other poets also have written poems similar to (nazire) Muallim Naci’s “olalı” rhymed ghazal. The last known example of these similar poems (nazire) belongs to Yahya Kemal. At first glance, Söz Meydani looks like a ghazal that praises the beloved, as in classical gazelles. But when the references in the poem are examined more carefully, the possibility of Söz Meydani being a poem about the Prophet emerges. As it is known, the poems about the Prophet form the genre of naat. Naat is a product of religious literature. In this article, Söz Meydani was compared with other examples of the naat genre and some common elements were found. It was emphasized that the Söz Meydani can be read as an example of naat. So through this poem, it is shown an unknown feature of Yahya Kemal until now that Yahya Kemal is a poet who wrote naat.
