Abstract

The Star of Ahmed as Heralding of The Prophet’s Birth, It’s Nature and Reflection on Turkish Poetry
In the Turkish poetry tradition, while the birth of the prophet is told, some of the celestial events are accepted as the signs of his birth. To understand the position of the poet, we need to know the position of heaven during the birth of the prophet. The narration on “star of Ahmad” has been studied by Muslim historians since the first sources on Islamic History. In this article, the nature of these narrations will be examined. To do this, we have improved a new method. We have learned that the existence of the conjunction Saturn and Jupiter in the prophet’s birth year from Mukaddimah of Ibn Haldun. Then, we have confirmed this data from one of the astronomy applications. In the Jewish astrology tradition, the Saturn-Jupiter conjunction is seen as a sign of the Messiah's coming. Their attribution of such a meaning to the conjunction possibly was because of the astrological knowledge they learned during the Babylonian exile. In our study, the connection between the Jewish astrology tradition and Babylonian mythology has been shown. We think that the “Star of Ahmad” is used as a metaphor for the conjunction of Saturn- Jupiter. Because of that, the statement of “the star of Ahmad” in this article is used in place of the Saturn-Jupiter conjunction. Although we have often across the heavy meteor shower as the sign of the prophet’s birth in the poems, the shower did not occur before the prophet’s birth but it happened before the very first revelation. We have concluded that the conjunction event and heavy meteor shower occurred at different times. This provided us with the information we needed to analyze the poems that allude to two celestial events while telling us about the birth of the Prophet. By this information, we brought examples from different periods of Turkish poetry and examined how the knowledge of "Ahmed's Star" in these works transformed over time.
