Abstract

Poetic Translation of Qasida al-Burda by Paşasaraylı Fazlî Efendi
Every stage of the Prophet Muhammad’s life, from his blessed entry into this world to his journey to the eternal world, has been reflected in literature, including many poetic and prosaic works, such as mawlid, hijranâma, ghazavat-i nabi, mu‘jizat-i nabi, mi‘rajnâma, the forty hadith, hilya, and na‘at (eulogy), which narrate his birth, migration, his holy wars, miracles, holy journey to the heavens, his physical description, his hadiths, and exemplary ethics, have been penned. The famous poem, by Ka‘b bin Zuhair (d. 24/645?) with its opening line “Banat Su‘âd”, is known as Qasida al-Burda (Ode of the Mantle) because it praises Mohammad with his mantle and holds special importance in Islamic literature as a pioneering work in the development of eulogies written to honor the Prophet. The eulogy written by Busiri (d. 696/1297?), who lived about six centuries after Ka‘b, whose real name was Al-Kawakib ad-Durriya fi Madg Khayr al-Bariya, would over time come to overshadow Ka‘b’s poem due to its narration style and literary power. This work has been introduced to Turkish literature in different forms, including translations, interpretations, and pentastichs, heptastichs, and distiches or tristiches inserted between the verses of poems. One of the poets credited with translating Qasida al-Burda in verse is Paşasaraylı Fazlî Efendi. It is understood from his prose, which is the subject of this study, that the poet, whose name could not be found in bibliographical dictionaries or other biographical sources, must have been alive in 1036/1626-27. His translation, written in the qasida (ode) style, consists of a total of 162 couplets, including a style of couplet that has no equivalent in the source text. Like most translators, Fazlî adopted a different style from that of the original form of the poem and wrote his work in the pattern of “mefâ‘îlün mefâ‘îlün mefâ‘îlün mefâ‘îlün”.
