Abstract
Riza Tevfik And a Paper of His on Aruz Prosody
The aim of this work is to discuss the 6 page paper titled “Arabî, Fârisî ve Türkî Lisânla Yazılmış Manzûmelerde Veznin Envâ‘ı ve Mu‘teber Olan Bahirler” on aruz prosody of Rıza Tevfik Bölükbaşı (d. 1949) who is one of the multidimensional persons of the 20th century who became famous for his poems in syllabic meter and was known for his arguing against aruz prosody in the syllabic meter-aruz prosody debate, and to present our thoughts what it means to write on such a topic in a period when it was fashionable to get rid of every elements of Classical Turkish literature. To this aim, first some general information about the uses of syllabic meter and aruz prosody in the period of Classical Turkish literature is given, then the syllabic meter-aruz prosody debate in the Modern Turkish literature is briefly touched on, and departing from his opinions expressed in the context of the syllabic meter-aruz prosody debate, Rıza Tevfik’s point of view on the subject of aruz prosody is presented. In this work, the paper in question is evaluated in the context of the soundness of Rıza Tevfik’s knowledge on the aruz prosody, and finally the text which is transcribed from Rıza Tevfik’s handwriting is presented for the readers.
