Abstract
Hussain Shevket’s Poetically Translation of Yavuz Sultan Selim's Persian Divan
Hussain Shevket (b. 1286/1869-70-d. 1952) was born in the Balkans and after completing his education, he served as the regent of Beykoz, Kartal, Chios and Kosovo. He served as Cadilesker Consultant, Uskudar Starboard Judge, Golos Muftiate. In the Republican period, his judicial duties ended on June 1, 1927, depending on the general arrangement in the courthouse corps, after his duties as a membership of Ankara Civil Court of First Instance and the Istanbul Court of First Instance. He served as a Kutahya Notary for a while. Hussain Shevket, who is married to miss Hayriye, has four children.
Hussain Shevket has six works that we can identify. Of these; Yadigâr-ı Bahriyye, Kosovo Sahara and Black Days in Arabic letters, Atatürk's Death, Screech of Nation and his Prophet Zişan's Advices are his works published in Latin letters. His sixth work is in the manuscript version that is a poetically Turkish translation of Yavuz Sultan Selim's Persian Divan. The critical text has been prepared for publication in two copies of which we can find.
Hussain Shevket emphasizes unity and solidarity in almost all of his works. The poetically translation of Yavuz Sultan Selim's Persian Divan while he was the regent of Kosovo can be evaluated within this framework. It also seems to be an important feature that it was translated in the Balkans at a time when different ethnic and religious identities were openly expressed and often separatist ideas were prominent.
In our article, after life and works of Hussain Shevket will be briefly introduced, and his work named Yavuz Sultan Selim’s Divan and Its Poetically Translation will be evaluated in terms of content and form. The justification of the translation, the way taken in the translation will be revealed largely based on what the translator said in the introduction and the sources that supporting him.
