Abstract
Ubayd-Allah Khan “Ubaydi” in Poems of Sani- Afsari A Caghatay Poet From 16th Century
Ubayd-allah Khan is one of Caghatay khans (=kings)
in 16th century and composer, calligrapher also a poet
writing in three languages (Turkish, Arabic, Persian) like
Shiban Khan (d. 1610) and Babur Shah (d. 1533). He is a
famous poet with hikmats which are religious poems in
Ahmad-i Yasavi (d. 1166)’s school, from 16th century
later his hikmats were mixed with Yasavi’s. He supported
poets who were writing poems and books in Persian,
especially Turkish lenguage, like Hilali-i Caghatayi (d.
1532) and Sani-Afsari. Ubayd-allah Khan was born in
1489 and his father is Bahadir Mahmud Sultan who is
brother Shiban Khan’s, so he was related to khan familiy.
He was king of Uzbeks in 1533, after that fought against
to Babur Shah and Safavis and put out them from
Mavaraun-nahr. He died in 1539 in Bukhara while was
fifty-three years old. He was a poet and his pat name is
“Ubaydi, Kul Ubaydi”. One of the poets who were in his
court Sani-Afsari, we don’t have any information about
his first name, life and training, but some tazkiras inform
about his birthplace that is Kermene (in Uzbekistan).
Before he was in with Shiban Khan, Babur Shah, his son
Humayun Padshah. From later Ubayd-allah Khan he
lived more and was in Khan’s son Abdal-aziz Khan’s
court. We don’t know when he died, but guess that he
lived until in middle of 16th century. Sani-Afsari
mentions about Ubayd-allah Khan in some ghazals from
his Turkish and Persian devans. In his opinion Ubaydallah
Khan a ruler in his heart country, a rose in his heart
garden and he is a slave of Khan untill end of his life
