Abstract

The Attitude of the Prophet against the Non-Muslim Poets
The poetry had very significant place among the Arabs, where Muhammad was sent as a prophet and the Arabs paid great attention to the poets. Hz. Muhammad also gave much importance to the poets and he was very happy when one of them was a Muslim. The reasons for this gladness were actually two. By their poetry, they would help the Muslims both to spread Islam and to preserve their selfconfidence by responding satire. In this article, non-Muslim poets are examined under two main headings. At first, when the Prophet began to tell Islam, in the first years of prophethood, his attitudes towards the poets of the Cahiliyye (ignorant period), many of which were not alive but whose poetry was read among the Arabs, were examined. Secondly, his attitude towards the infidel poets attacking Muslims with their poems was tried to be examined When we closely look at the attitude towards the non- Muslim poets of the Prophet, it is realized that he did not touched any poet unless himself and Islam are attacked. For him two issues were highly important: To insult Islam and Muslims, to praise and encourage sins. It was these two issues that he could not accept. He never criticized to poems not insulting and not praising sin. He even liked and praised poems that encouraged morality even if written by infidel poets.
